WNBA season is upon us! A lot has happened this offseason, so I’ve put together some quick and handy guides for every team to help you start the season off right! Planning to go to a game? My sponsor, Turn The Paige Travel, has got all of your travel needs covered! Let’s talk hoops!

What’s New

You have to look hard to see the moves last year’s runner-up made. Post-All-Star-Break rental Myisha Hines-Allen is gone. F/C Dorka Juhasz is sitting out this season to give her body a break. F Jessica Shephard is back after spending all of last season playing in Italy. They also signed French C Marième Badiane, drafted Russian F Anastasiia Kosu, and traded for Karlie Samuelson.

What’s Good

This team was a bounce or two away from Cathy Englebert being wildly inappropriately dressed for the trophy ceremony. The key contributors are all back with a chip on their shoulder, starting with star F Napheesa Collier. She has firmly planted herself in “if she’s on your team, you have a shot” territory. She epitomizes the versatility and two-way play that coach Cheryl Reeve expects from this roster, bigs in particular.

The offense is a thing of beauty. Predicated on ball movement and spacing, they almost always get the shot they want. In the rare cases that they have to create something out of nothing, Collier, SG Kayla McBride, and PG Courtney Williams are tough shot makers. Williams and her backup, Natisha Hiedeman, aren’t threats from deep, but they are highly skilled at using the space this offense creates to penetrate and make something good happen.

As great as they are offensively, they are even better on defense. Their length gives opposing offenses fits. They are either in passing lanes or contesting shots. Again, their bigs move well, so even when you think you have an open 3, you can expect to see a 6’4” body flying at you.

What Could Go Wrong

Their role players are exceptional at playing their roles. However, in order to win a championship, sometimes you need a role player or two to step up and play above their role. This is especially important the deeper you get in the postseason, when teams are great at scheming for your stars. Too often, the Lynx’s role players were content to simply watch this play out.

Somewhat related, as great as this roster is constructed for what Reeve likes to do, they can only use so many versatile bigs at a time. They’d be well-served to make a move to add some interior toughness or another perimeter player who can create their own offense. These issues were glaring in that brutal game 5 loss, but it felt like they had been building to that all season.

What To Expect

They will once again be one of the best teams in the WNBA. Just looking around the league, the Lynx are the frontrunners to win the title. Nobody has quite the mix of talent, chemistry, and roster stability that they possess. Can Phee finally get them over the hump and claim her first MVP trophy in the process?
