Your 2025 Indiana Fever Season Preview!
Are the Fever gearing up for a title run?
Welcome to the “Casual Fan” section of The Show Notes! This is where I talk about sports. Certain aspects of what you read here, such as the depth of the analysis and amount of objectivity, will vary depending on a number of different factors. I promise to always be entertaining, though. WNBA season is upon us! A lot has happened this offseason, so I’ve put together some quick and handy guides for every team to help you start the season off right! Planning to go to a game? My sponsor, Turn The Paige Travel, has got all of your travel needs covered! Let’s talk hoops!
What’s New
Swinging for the fences this offseason. Stephanie White replaces Christie Sides as head coach, and Sides was probably happier than anybody about it. This is actually White’s second stint with the team. Back in 2015, she was the head coach when the Fever made their first-ever WNBA Finals appearance.
A lot of roster turnover as NaLyssa Smith, Katie Lou Samuelson, Erica Wheeler, Temi Fagbenle, and Kristy Wallace are gone. The big acquisitions were Natasha Howard and DeWanna Bonner, who made back-to-back All-Star teams under White as a member of the Sun. They also added depth in face of the league Sydney Colson, Brianna Turner, MAGA’s own Sophie Cunningham, and draft pick Makayla Timpson.
What’s Good
Many have the Fever as their title favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Caitlin Clark is one of the most dynamic offensive talents we’ve seen. Her long 3s make the highlights, but it’s her playmaking that truly sets her apart. As some expected, there was an adjustment period, but Indiana worked through it to become one of the best teams in the league in the second half of the season.
The organization did a great job of building on that momentum by bringing in plenty of offensive talent like Bonner and Howard for Clark to utilize, while also adding important depth pieces like the underrated Colson. In addition to helping an already exciting offense become even better, Bonner, Howard, and Colson also bring championship experience. They have 7 WNBA Championships between them.
While they brought in a lot of talent, the most important transaction was actually re-signing Kelsey Mitchell. Once she and Clark got on the same page, Mitchell quickly became one of the most feared scorers in the league. She’s been able to put the ball in the hoop her whole career, but she took it up another notch or two. Clark will be at the top of everyone’s scouting report, but opposing defenses are going to have fits trying to figure out how to stop Mitchell, too.
What Could Go Wrong
They are going to score early, often, and easily. Will they score enough to make up for concerns on the defensive end? Howard is a former Defensive Player of the Year, but her best days on that side of the ball are behind her. Clark struggles to stay in front of opposing PGs. Their best perimeter defenders are Colson and the tenacious Lexie Hull. The best overall defender they have is probably Aliyah Boston, who is very good but struggles against the elite bigs of the league that they’ll almost certainly have to face in the playoffs.
While I expect Clark’s playmaking to cover up for a lot of potential issues on offense, there are still potential pitfalls there. As we learned last year, chemistry isn’t instant. With so many new pieces, it’s reasonable to expect some hiccups. Also, they are relying on several players who were in elementary school during the Clinton Administration. Sure, they were effective last year, but we’re at the point with them where we shouldn’t take good play and health for granted.
What To Expect
A full season of what we saw the second half of last year. How does that look? Well, Clark will make a strong run at the league’s MVP Award. It’ll take a hell of a showing to break through the A’ja-Phee-Stewie Triumvirate, but if anybody can do it, it’s CC. Overall, this will be one of the most exciting offenses in the league, and they’ll ride that offense to a top-4 playoff seed. Ultimately, their undoing will be on the defensive end, but a huge step in the right direction as they look to capitalize on the Clark phenomenon on the court as well.
