Your 2025 Golden State Valkyries Season Preview!
More like WNB-Bay, am I right? (Sorry.)
Welcome to the “Casual Fan” section of The Show Notes! This is where I talk about sports. Certain aspects of what you read here, such as the depth of the analysis and amount of objectivity, will vary depending on a number of different factors. I promise to always be entertaining, though. WNBA season is upon us! A lot has happened this offseason, so I’ve put together some quick and handy guides for every team to help you start the season off right! Planning to go to a game? My sponsor, Turn The Paige Travel, has got all of your travel needs covered! Let’s talk hoops!
What’s New
The entire franchise.
What’s Good
Uh, I mean, I like their branding a lot. But seriously, they do have the building blocks of something with all of the role players they managed to acquire. Kayla Thornton, Tiffany Hayes, and Monique Billings are proven commodities. Unproven players like Kate Martin and Laeticia Amihere are intriguing. And odds are that someone is going to get an opportunity they wouldn’t have received elsewhere and use it to have a breakout season. Head coach Natalie Nakase will do a lot of experimenting to see exactly what she has with this group.
What Could Go Wrong
Everything and nothing. Everything in the sense that they will not be good. This is virtually a guarantee. But nothing will truly go wrong because all of this is expected. The way the front office handled the entire offseason, from the expansion draft to free agency to the college draft, was confusing. They appeared to punt on the expansion draft to keep their options and cap space open for a marquee free agent. However, this wasn’t an especially strong free agent class, and the stars available seemed to want very little to do with being the face of a franchise that had a bare cupboard. After several college stars opted to return to school, the Valkyrie selected 19-year-old Lithuanian Juste Jocyte, who will remain overseas for at least this season. They got caught up in the air and came away with no real star power.
What To Expect
Losses. At times, it will get ugly. In fact, most times it will get ugly. If they win a quarter of their games, they will have overachieved. But that’s okay. Valkyrie fans will have a whole college season to enjoy and dream of their future superstar. In the meantime, we’re going to get to see a lot of players we’ve been dying to see. Even better, some of them are going to look pretty good!
