Your 2025 Dallas Wings Season Preview!
Paige Bueckers? Paige Bueckers. Plus a 6POY prediction!
Welcome to the “Casual Fan” section of The Show Notes! This is where I talk about sports. Certain aspects of what you read here, such as the depth of the analysis and amount of objectivity, will vary depending on a number of different factors. I promise to always be entertaining, though. WNBA season is upon us! A lot has happened this offseason, so I’ve put together some quick and handy guides for every team to help you start the season off right! Planning to go to a game? My sponsor, Turn The Paige Travel, has got all of your travel needs covered! Let’s talk hoops!
What’s New
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the Wings have a new head coach. Laticia Tramell, who looks like she can make an incredible batch of cornbread from scratch, is out. Chris Koclanes, who does not, is in. That hire was made by new GM Curt Miller. I’m not sure Curt slept at all after getting the job. He was straight up wheelin’ and dealin’.
Curt turned Satou Sabally, Kalani Brown, Jacy Sheldon, Jaelyn Brown, and Sevgi Uzun into DiJonai Carrington, NaLyssa Smith, and Ty Harris, along with the pick they used to select Aziaha James. Versatile bruiser Myisha Hines-Allen was also signed in free agency. Even if they did absolutely nothing, there would be plenty to be happy about after winning the lottery and drafting superstar Paige Bueckers.
What’s Good
This might be the best possible situation for Bueckers. An exceptional all-around player who prefers setting others up to scoring on offense, she can play to her strengths alongside a ton of offensive talent, including Arike Ogunbowale, a willing and fearless shooter, and Maddy Siegrest, who was cruising towards being named last season’s Most Improved Player before getting hurt. Maddy also had a wildly productive showing during Athletes Unlimited this offseason.
The Carrington addition provides some much-needed perimeter defense for a team that was dead last in scoring defense last season. I have already gone on the record as saying Ty Harris is my pick for 6POY. She thrived in her first season as a starter last year with the Sun and should slide into the 3rd guard role here. Their offense should be more well-rounded and less streaky than in years past.
What Could Go Wrong
While Carrington and Bueckers figure to help out defensively, there are still some big question marks on that side of the ball, especially in the post. After trading away Kalani Brown and cutting Stephanie Soares, the only true center on the roster with playing experience is Teaira McCowan. She’s as inconsistent as she is talented and gets one of the worst whistles in the league. What happens when she inevitably finds herself having an off night or in foul trouble?
What To Expect
It feels lazy to say they’ll be better than last season, but most of those struggles were injury-related. The lack of interior presence puts a hard ceiling on how good they can be, but they are going to be fun to watch nonetheless. More often than not, their offense will be able to overshadow their defensive issues. In addition to a 6POY season from Harris, look out for a ROY campaign from Paige, more efficient Arike, and another step forward for Siegrest. Most importantly, they will return to the postseason.
