Your 2025 Connecticut Sun Season Preview!
The rebuild is underway!
Welcome to the “Casual Fan” section of The Show Notes! This is where I talk about sports. Certain aspects of what you read here, such as the depth of the analysis and amount of objectivity, will vary depending on a number of different factors. I promise to always be entertaining, though. WNBA season is upon us! A lot has happened this offseason, so I’ve put together some quick and handy guides for every team to help you start the season off right! Planning to go to a game? My sponsor, Turn The Paige Travel, has got all of your travel needs covered! Let’s talk hoops!
What’s New
Oh brother. What isn’t new? That kid isn’t going to know a soul at his next birthday party! The only players remaining from last season’s playoff roster are TikTok chef Marina Mabrey and Olivia Nelson-Ododa. Even head coach Stephanie White is gone, replaced by Rachid Meziane.
They did bring back C Tina Charles, who earned the first MVP in Sun history in 2012. PG Lindsay Allen reunites with former Sky teammate Mabrey. The rest of the roster exists solely to make you feel old. PG Jacy Sheldon came over from the Wings and has looked impressive in the preseason. Draft picks Saniya Rivers and Aneesah Morrow should get plenty of opportunities when they are back in the swing of things. And they still have Brendan Glasheen!
What’s Good
Well, they’re out of that weird purgatory. 6 straight seasons of making it to at least the semifinals. 0 rings to show for it. Imagine how annoying ESPN would be about this if they had covered the WNBA before last year.
Charles was incredibly effective for the Dream last season. Nobody knows how long Marina will be here, but when she gets hot, there’s not much opposing defenses can do. We’ve seen enough flashes from Olivia Nelson-Ododa to be intrigued by her increased minutes.
What Could Go Wrong
By now, we all know the deal with Marina Mabrey. An incredible player…when she’s playing a specific role. That role has not been “#1 option on offense,” which she will be here. This also speaks to the overall lack of offensive firepower on the roster. Charles can average double-figures in her sleep at this point, but outside of her and Marina, there’s just not a lot of proven scoring.
Now, a constipated offense isn’t exactly new for the Sun, but they usually have an elite defense to cover for it. I cannot envision a scenario in which that holds true this season. An offense that struggles to score and a defense that struggles to stop the other team from scoring is a Marina Mabrey TikTok recipe. (I’m sorry to keep referencing this, but her cooking makes me nervous. Why has nobody stopped her?)
What To Expect
There will not be many wins, but you figured that out already. And while the potential is there for it to look bad at times, I think there will be enough bright spots for Sun fans to feel good about starting over. Rookies Morrow (injury) and Rivers (mother’s passing) haven’t had the chance to work into the fold yet, but they each bring skills that should translate immediately. Sheldon looks poised to prove that she’s a legitimate 2-way starting PG in the league. And Mabrey, who is the Atlanta Dream Ticket Office of cooking, probably gets traded at some point for draft capital, as is tradition.
