Now, to the sports!

  • MLB Playoffs: NLDS Game 4 Coverage begins at 6:08 pm (ET) on TBS

As of right this second, only one of these games will NOT be necessary. My Dodgers have stolen two games in Philly, and possibly identified a closer who will not give me a stroke in Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki. In the other series, the Cubs saved their season with a 4-3 nailbiter. They get another chance at Wrigley to keep hope alive! Gametime switches to 7:08 pm (ET) if Cubs-Brewers is the only game.

  • College Football: Southern Miss Golden Eagles @ Georgia Southern Eagles at 8:00 pm (ET) on ESPN2

Oh, that’s where Georgia Southern is! They’ll always be a SoCon team to me. Also, the home of the real Adrian Peterson. The Statesboro version led them to 2 FCS national titles, and is still the all-time D-I leader in career rushing yards (FCS and FBS). Sadly, time has passed me by, and they are in the Sun Belt now. They’ll face off against conference foe Southern Miss to determine which type of eagle is superior.

  • MLB Playoffs: ALDS Game 5 Coverage begins at 4:40 pm (ET) on FS1 and Fox

We’ve got a “necessary” and a “probably not necessary,” folks! At the risk of looking like a fool, the Yankees have looked ridiculous most of the series. They are currently losing late in Game 4, which would mercifully end their season. Detroit and Seattle have looked pretty evenly matched, though! The Tiger bats came alive to force a do-or-die game. They’ll play it in Seattle. If that ends up being the only game, they’ll play at 8:08 pm (ET).

  • Track & Field: Athlos Meet at 7:15 pm (ET) on YouTube/X

Year 2, so things are going a bit better here than they are over at Grand Slam. Some of the biggest names in women’s sprints, middle distances, and long jump get together to put on a show in NYC. Ciara will perform as well! This will switch to a league format in 2026.

  • WNBA Finals: Las Vegas Aces @ Phoenix Mercury at 8:00 pm (ET) on ESPN

The first-ever automatically necessary Game 4 in WNBA Finals history! Just when it looked like Phoenix was going to steal the series opener, Dana Evans happened. Game 2 was a masterpiece by A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young. How many people in the history of basketball can match A’ja’s resume right this second? How much smaller does the list get if Las Vegas wins this championship?

  • College Football: #8 Alabama Crimson Tide @ #14 Missouri Tigers at 12:00 pm (ET) on ABC

Mizzou QB Beau Pribula transferred over from Penn State. If you’ve watched Penn State QB Drew Allar at all, this information has surely put your brain in a pretzel. The real story for the Tigers is the nation’s leading rusher, Ahmad Hardy. If you have footage of him being tackled, please send it to me.

  • College Volleyball: #22 USC Trojans @ UCLA Bruins at 3:30 pm (ET) on NBC

You know the game I like to play here, and we have a winner in Trojan freshman OH Presley Kiffin. Her dad, Lane, is, well, Lane Kiffin. The same Lane Kiffin who was the head football coach here at USC until he was infamously fired in an office in LAX at 3 in the morning after giving up 62 points in a loss to Arizona State. Guess the Kiffin family is forgiving!

  • MLB Playoffs: NLDS Game 5 Coverage begins at 4:38 pm (ET) on TBS

I will have perished if the Dodgers are here. It will almost certainly have been Tanner Scott and Blake Treinen’s fault.

  • College Football: #18 BYU Cougars @ Arizona Wildcats at 8:00 pm (ET) on ESPN2

Brent Brennan has gotten the Wildcats back on track fast. They’ve already matched last season’s win total. QB Noah Fifita is looking much more like the 2023 version of himself that helped lead Arizona to 10 wins under former coach Jedd Fisch.

  • WNBA Finals: Phoenix Mercury @ Las Vegas Aces at 3:00 pm (ET) on ABC

The theme of the week is “if necessary.” This has looked anything but up to this point, but the Mercury are 3-1 at home this postseason. They’ll have two chances to make this necessary.

  • MLB Playoffs: ALCS Game 1 at TBD on Fox

Check your local listings when the ALDS finishes up. Former Red Sox legend turned Fox Baseball pregame host David Ortiz has an interesting way to remember how to pronounce Cam Schlittler’s name. Still not sure what the purpose of Derek Jeter is, other than to show us that you can have money, fame, and success without having any fun at all.

  • NFL: San Francisco 49ers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4:25 pm (ET) on CBS

Tampa Bay rookie WR Emeka Egbuka is already one of the most productive playmakers in the league. Probably shouldn’t be a huge shock after ending his career at Ohio State as the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards. He’s a big reason the Bucs sit atop the NFC South despite the always-consistent Mike Evans being out. They face off with the NFC West-leading 49ers, who are somehow doing this with Mac Jones at QB. Starter Brock Purdy is listed as questionable.

  • NFL: Detroit Lions @ Kansas City Chiefs at 8:20 pm (ET) on NBC

Okay, look, at this point, you should just be watching the Lions whenever they play. After a season-opening dud, they’ve won 4 in a row and lead the NFL in scoring. They take on a Chiefs team that lost on quite possibly the goofiest game-winning touchdown run in the history of the game. Remember when Kansas City had the fun, productive offense, and Detroit was inventing embarrassing ways to lose?

  • MLB Playoffs: ALCS Game 2 and NLCS Game 1 at TBD on Fox/TBS

There’s nothing more to say! Check your local listings!

  • Horror Movie of the Week: Hell House LLC (2015)

A documentary crew investigates a tragedy that took place at a haunted house attraction a couple of years prior. Lucky for them, the group of friends who had purchased what was an abandoned, allegedly haunted hotel filmed the process of trying to transform it into said haunted house attraction. We get to see the documentary crew watch the Hell House team encounter what can most charitably be described as weirdness that gets weirder as they get closer to opening night. Lucky for them, they even snag an interview with one of the staff members present for the ordeal. Tap in as they piece together what really happened!

  • College Football: New Mexico State Aggies @ Liberty Flames at 7:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN

Traditionally, mid-week games have been for the MAC. If you, like me, have been wondering where your sweet MAC-tion has been all year, I kind of have an answer. It’s Conference USA territory now. Going to be hard to come up with a nickname for that, but it’s college football nonetheless. Liberty needs to win out if head coach Jamey Chadwell is going to keep his streak of 5 consecutive 8+ win seasons alive. They’ll face off with an Aggies team coming off a win and a bye week.

  • MLB Playoffs: NLCS Game 2 at TBD on TBS

  • College Football: UTEP Miners @ Sam Houston Bearkats at 7:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN

That’s right, more mid-week Conference US-Action! Yeah, that doesn’t quite work. Anyways, UTEP QB Malachi Nelson was a 5-star recruit in the Class of 2023. Looking at the list now, whoever is in charge would probably like a redo. Nelson has had quite the journey.

He originally committed to Oklahoma before following Lincoln Riley to USC. After being stuck behind Heisman winner/eventual #1 pick Caleb Williams and current Louisville starting QB Miller Moss for a season, he made his way to Boise State. Unable to rise above QB #2 there, he packed his bags for UTEP. Some of that 5-star talent must remain, as he beat out last year’s starter, Skyler Locklear, for the job this season. While he’s had mixed results, fellow 2023 5-star QB Arch Manning had a great game against Sam Houston, so we’ll see!

As always, thank you for reading! Make sure you’re subscribed so you get this in your inbox first thing Thursday morning! Also, all the cool people are sharing it with their friends! See you next week!
