Fur-man, fried chicken, and some MAJOR mid-major women's hoops!

Welcome to Screen Shots! This is where I tell you what sporting events you should watch on TV every week! Make sure you subscribe so it comes straight to your inbox! Have your own suggestions? Shoot me an email at [email protected]!

Happy Thanksgiving! You will notice that there is no college football in this edition. That’s because I published my 2nd Annual Comprehensive Guide to Rivalry Week! Everything you need to know about every game is covered in there for your reading and viewing pleasure! You’re welcome! If you want to hear me talk college football, check out this week’s episode of The Nameless College Football Show! P.D. and I discovered some big Brian Kelly news that shook me to my core!

Now, to the sports!

  • Men’s College Basketball: Richmond Spiders @ Furman Paladins at 11:00 am (ET) on ESPN2

The major televised events on Thanksgiving are the parade, the National Dog Show, and, of course, the NFL games. As is tradition, my dog, Kobe, will be picking the NFL games for his show, Beyond The Bark. One of his greatest picks ever in terms of both views and luck was when he correctly picked 13th-seeded Furman to upset 4th-seeded Virginia in the first round of the 2023 Men’s NCAA Tournament. His reasoning was that Furman equals “fur man,” and, of course, a “fur man” is a dog. Well, look at his face when I told him that Furman was playing a Richmond team with a player by the name of Jonathan Beagle.

A good dog. Perhaps the goodest.

  • NFL: Green Bay Packers @ Detroit Lions at 1:00 pm (ET) on Fox

The Lions have been a Thanksgiving Day staple as long as I can remember. Back when they were sorry, I’d watch this game specifically to see Lowcountry native Robert Porcher. Now, they’re good, and I’m tuning in to see Jahmyr Gibbs, who has no ties to the Lowcountry that I’m aware of. He put on an absolute clinic against the Giants last week, rushing for 219 yards on just 15 carries and catching 11 passes. The Packers’ defense is top-5 in scoring defense and yards allowed, but this dude is different.

  • NFL: Kansas City Chiefs @ Dallas Cowboys at 4:30 pm (ET) on CBS

I think we all know what Patrick Mahomes will be eating for Thanksgiving.

  • NFL: Cincinnati Bengals @ Baltimore Ravens at 8:20 pm (ET) on NBC

This season hasn’t gone how either team envisioned, but let’s just take it a game at a time, starting with this one. The Ravens weathered a Lamar Jackson injury and still find themselves in a great position to win the AFC North. The Bengals weren’t so lucky with Joe Burrow’s injury, but he should make his return in this one. They have less than a 1% chance to make the postseason, according to ESPN, but we need to see him and Ja’Marr Chase as much as possible.

  • Men’s College Basketball: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Marquette Golden Eagles at 2:00 pm (ET) on NBC

Nijel Pack is still playing college basketball. The Sooners’ leading scorer made a name for himself at Kansas State as an undersized scoring guard in the Big 12, competing against the likes of Austin Reaves and Cade Cunningham. While not quite talented enough to turn pro, he became one of college basketball’s most sought-after commodities right as NIL wackiness peaked. The 2-year $800,000 contract that persuaded him to transfer to Miami was bankrolled by booster John Ruiz’s funny money. The deal and public sleaziness surrounding it were held up by many as a sign that college athletics were changing for the worse.

Perhaps not changing can also be for the worse. Marquette coach Shaka Smart was once himself the most sought-after commodity in college basketball. He averaged 27 wins a year in his 6 seasons at VCU, which led to big money to coach at Texas. However, after a promising start, he could never get the Longhorns to the level he took VCU. He’s had more success at Marquette; however, a slow start to the season has led to criticism about Smart’s own transfer portal policies. The Golden Eagles have not accepted since Smart accepted the head coaching job in the spring of 2021.

So who’s right? In a perfect world, they both are. Athletes should be compensated for their services. Programs should prioritize roster continuity and player development. In an effort to marry these two philosophies, it’s only right that Smart accept his first-ever transfer at Marquette next season: Nijel Pack.

  • NBA: New Orleans Pelicans @ Golden State Warriors at 8:30 pm (ET) on NBA TV

In case you are college footballed out. The Pelicans are absolutely terrible. It is what it is. However, it might not always be like that. Rookies Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears have been revelations. After a monster performance against the Nuggets, Queen was receiving comparisons to Nikola Jokic from Jokic himself. Meanwhile, Fears’ scoring ability got him inserted into the starting lineup after just 2 games. His efficiency is something you don’t typically see from rookies, and he’s got some point guard skills on top of that. The future should be bright in NOLA!

  • Women’s College Basketball: Fairfield Stags @ #11 Iowa Hawkeyes at 1:00 pm (ET) on BTN

Fairfield has been one of the more impressive mid-major programs in the country recently, having won 59 games over the past two seasons. F Meghan Andersen has been named to the All-MAAC First Team in both of her collegiate seasons and is currently the leading scorer in the conference. She’ll lead an upset bid against Jan Jensen’s Hawkeye squad. The trio of Ava Heiden, Hannah Stuelke, and Chit-Chat Wright provides a much more balanced attack than we saw the last time we saw an Iowa team ranked this highly.

  • Women’s College Basketball: #14 Tennessee Volunteers @ #3 UCLA Bruins at 4:30 pm (ET) on FS1

Gather round as we try to figure out if the Vols’ quirky playing style and substitution patterns will actually work consistently at a high level! If nothing else, it will give us a glimpse into how Bruins star C Lauren Betts might fare in a faster-paced WNBA. With the draft lottery set, mock drafts have the 6’7” Betts going somewhere in the top-5.

  • Christmas Movie of the Week: Home Alone (1990)

It feels wrong to start off the month with any other movie. I love it, but there are two major plot holes that I must address. First of all, Harry and Marv should have either shot Kevin or moved on to a different house. Maybe both. Secondly, where was Child Protective Services? Did the McAllisters’ vast wealth and whiteness protect them from the clear consequences they should have faced? Underrated, cool part that always fascinated me as a child was when Kevin’s mom was talking to the doughnut-eating cop on the phone, and a piece of doughnut lands perfectly on the phone’s mouthpiece. Anyways, enjoy!

  • NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder @ Golden State Warriors at 11:00 PM (ET) on NBC

The most iconic game during the Warriors’ 73-win season was their win over OKC in the Steph Curry “Double Bang” game. As they face off again with the Thunder on a 77-win pace, perhaps Shai will draw a similarly exciting foul to win the game!

  • Women’s College Basketball: Montana State Bobcats @ North Dakota State Bison at 8:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN

Some major mid-major hoops! The Bobcats’ sophomore duo of Taylee Chirrik and Addison Harris is putting up a combined 38 points per game for last season’s Big Sky champion. They’ll try to outduel Avery Koenen, who is 2nd in the nation in FG% on her way to 18.4 points per game. They don’t put nearly enough women’s mid-major games on TV, so savor this one!

As always, thank you for reading! Make sure you’re subscribed so you get this in your inbox first thing Thursday mornings! And share with your friends! I’ll see you next week!
