Women’s International Soccer: England vs. Sweden at 3:00 pm (ET) on Fox
A rematch of 2022’s semifinals, where England drilled Sweden 4-0. However, more recent history has been much closer as both qualifying matches between the clubs ended in ties. I can guarantee that there will be no tie in this one. Will Sweden get revenge?

Women’s International Soccer: Spain vs. Switzerland at 3:00 pm (ET) on Fox
How much does home-field advantage matter in soccer? The host country has won the last 2 tournaments. That will be put to the ultimate test as Switzerland takes on an absolute juggernaut of a Spanish team. You will recognize Swiss manager Pia Sundhage from her time leading the USWNT.
WNBA: 3-Point Contest and Skills Competition at 8:00 pm (ET) on ESPN
Worth the watch because Sabrina Ionescu is one of the greatest 3-point contest competitors ever. She hit an absurd 25 of 27 in 2023, then gave Steph Curry all he could handle during the 2024 NBA All-Star festivities. Also, defending champ Allisha Gray is back!
Caitlin Clark is supposed to participate as well, but a reaggravation of a groin injury has her status up in the air. She’s had an abysmal season shooting the 3, but it’s worth noting that she would have home-court advantage. Clark has been significantly better at Gainbridge Fieldhouse (39%) than in enemy confines (6%).

Women’s International Soccer: France vs. Germany at 3:00 pm (ET) on Fox
France has looked like the second-best team in the tournament, but they will have their hands full with FIFA’s 3rd-best team in the world. The Germans are still adjusting to life after legendary Alexandra Popp, but Lea Schüller might be an even more prolific goal scorer when it’s all said and done. Schüller has 54 goals in 78 international matches.
WNBA: WNBA All-Star Game at 8:30 pm (ET) on ABC
They still take this more seriously than the men, and it’s guaranteed to be more exciting than the drafting of the teams.

MLB: Detroit Tigers @ Texas Rangers at 7:10 pm (ET) on ESPN
Time to make a big, bold prediction: Tarik Skubal throws a no-hitter. His incredible season is a big reason why Detroit has the best record in baseball. He’ll be on the mound for this one against a Rangers team that just hasn’t found its offense this year. Rock, meet hard place. Imagine how amazed you’ll be if I’m right!

On This Day In Sports History: In 1979, WNBA star Tamika Catchings was born
One of the most underappreciated players in a generation of underappreciated players. She spent her entire career with the Fever, and if they don’t celebrate her legacy during All-Star weekend, I will riot. Not only did she lead Indiana to its only title in 2012, but she stacked up individual accomplishment after individual accomplishment over the course of her 15-year career. 2011 MVP, 5 Defensive Player of the Year trophies, 12 All-Defensive AND All-WNBA team selections, and a Rookie of the Year award after sitting out an entire season due to a torn ACL.

Women’s International Soccer: UEFA Women’s Euros Semifinal Match at 3:00 pm (ET) on Fox
Should be good soccer!
MLB: Boston Red Sox @ Philadelphia Phillies at 6:45 pm (ET) on TBS
Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber won this year’s All-Star Game MVP after hitting 3 homers in 3 opportunities in the first-ever tie-breaking swing-off to lead the NL to the win. The man specializes in dingers. He’s one of 12 active players with 300+ career home runs, and is on pace to hit 50 this year.

Women’s International Soccer: UEFA Women’s Euros Semifinal Match at 3:00 pm (ET) on Fox
Should be some more good soccer!
WNBA: Atlanta Dream @ Phoenix Mercury at 10:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN
Different location, same results for Mercury F Alyssa Thomas as she finds herself firmly in the MVP discussion in her first season in the desert. I feel like not enough is made of the juxtaposition of the league’s most bruising player also being the leader in assists per game. Assists have such delicate energy. Anyways, this is the Mercury’s last home game before a 5-game road trip. The Dream feature their own MVP candidate in Allisha Gray, who will be carrying an even bigger load with star Rhyne Howard out until August with a knee injury.
As always, thank you for reading! Be sure to subscribe so you get this first thing every Thursday, and share with your friends. It’s a great conversation piece! I’ll see you next week!
