Eye makeup, 1 on 1, and dunking on Yao!

Welcome to Screen Shots! This is where I tell you what sporting events you should watch on TV every week! Make sure you subscribe so it comes straight to your inbox! Have your own suggestions? Shoot me an email at [email protected]!

First things first, you need to watch my show! Former NBA Player David Harrison returned to break down all the moves from the wildest NBA trade deadline that I can remember. He also set the record straight on his relationship with Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison and shared some cool stories about what it’s like when one of your teammates gets traded!

Now, to the sports!

  • College Softball: #12 Florida State Seminoles @ #15 Missouri Tigers at 10:00 am (ET) on ESPN2

With football season being over, I’m leaning HEAVY into basketball. However, it’s also a great chance to get familiar with some other sports. I’ve definitely tuned into the Women’s College World Series before, so it makes sense to start getting to know these programs now. You’ll recognize Seminoles’ star Michaela Edenfield immediately, thanks to her home runs and elaborate eye makeup.

  • Women’s College Basketball: #3 Texas Longhorns @ #8 Kentucky Wildcats at 7:00 pm (ET) on ESPN2

The Longhorns grinded out a tough victory against the then-#2 South Carolina Gamecocks. There’s no rest in the SEC though, so they hit the road to take on another top-10 opponent in Kentucky. Spoiler alert: there’s more to come!

  • Unrivaled Basketball: 1-on-1 Tournament Semi-Finals and Final at 7:30 pm (ET) on TNT

Having this during NBA All-Star Weekend is fantastic because NBA players would never do such a thing. We can’t even get them to put their egos on the line enough to pretend to try during the All-Star game itself. But, as often is the case, the women swoop in to save the day. The wildly versatile Azurá Stevens will attempt to do what nobody in Unrivaled has done so far and stop Napheesa Collier. On the other side, Arike Ogunbowale represents for the guards as she takes on tournament sleeper Aaliyah Edwards. Winners face off and compete for the $200,000 prize!

  • Women’s College Basketball: Army Black Knights @ Navy Midshipmen at 11:00 am (ET) on CBSSN

In what is a testament to her impact, Army women’s basketball has become synonymous with Maggie Dixon for me. In just her first season as head coach, she led the Black Knights to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite a first-round loss to Candace Parker and the Vols (where Candace became the first woman to dunk in a tournament game), the future seemed bright for both Dixon and the program. Sadly, in a cruel reminder that nothing is guaranteed, Dixon passed away just weeks later at the age of 28 due to a heart condition. For more on the impact Maggie made in her only season at West Point, read this article by Elizabeth Merrill.

  • Men’s College Basketball: #1 Auburn Tigers @ #2 Alabama Crimson Tide at 4:00 pm (ET) on ESPN

Yes, they’re doing this in men’s basketball now too. What’s the hoops equivalent of a kick-six?

  • Women’s College Basketball: #7 UConn Huskies @ #4 South Carolina Gamecocks at 1:00 pm (ET) on ABC

UConn has lost 3 in a row to top-25 teams. Logically, this makes sense because top-25 teams are good. But also we have a higher standard for UConn because, well, they’re UConn. They will have their hands full in this one as they head to Columbia to take on a South Carolina team that will be eager to prove that its loss to Texas was a fluke. I’ll be in the building! I was last year too. I wrote about it here in case you feel like reminiscing.

  • Women’s College Basketball: #5 LSU Tigers @ #3 Texas Longhorns at 3:00 pm (ET) on ABC

No need to change the channel. Top-5 matchup between 2 of the 3 teams atop the SEC standings featuring some of the best players in the country and fiery head coaches. Someone get Vic Schaefer a basketball sweater so we can go full Spiderman meme with it.

  • Women’s College Basketball: #14 Kansas State Wildcats @ #18 West Virginia Mountaineers at 2:00 pm (ET) on Fox

Life without injured star Ayoka Lee has not been easy for the Wildcats, but PG Serena Sundell has stepped up big in her absence. Known for her playmaking abilities, Sundell has showcased a scoring ability that has her climbing up WNBA draft boards. This will be the ultimate test for her as Mountaineer guards JJ Quinerly and Kyah Watson are 2 of the best perimeter defenders in the nation.

  • Men’s College Basketball: Texas Southern Tigers @ Southern University Jaguars at 9:00 pm (ET) on ESPNU

A SWAC showdown! Southern is cruising to their 1st regular season title in over a decade despite not having a single player averaging double-digits in scoring. Leading scorer Michael Jacobs is close at 9.9 PPG, but coach Kevin Johnson is utilizing a balanced attack that has 8 players averaging 15+ minutes per game.

  • On This Day In Sports History: Kobe Bryant posterizes Yao Ming in 2003

I was going to talk specifically about this play. About how Kobe Bryant dunked on the newest, biggest phenomenon in the league. About when I showed up to handle my ball kid responsibilities at the Charleston Lowgators practice the next day, and everybody was still buzzing about it. About how former NBA player and then-Lowgator assistant coach Kelvin Upshaw got a broom out of the janitor’s closet to show how high Kobe got to clear the 7’6” Yao. About how grown men, grown, professional basketball-playing men were in just as much awe about the play as my 14-year-old self. I was going to write about that, but how do you write about just this play?

How do you write about the play without writing about the game? A double-overtime thriller where Kobe dropped 52 points to lead the Shaq-less Lakers to a win over a Rockets team that was ahead of them in the standings before the game started. How do you write about the play without writing about this play from exactly a week before when Kobe caught a Robert Horry touchdown pass, put the ball around his waist to avoid Nuggets defender Vincent Yarborough, then posterized him with a 1-handed reverse dunk? How do you write about the play without writing about the stretch of games? Kobe was in the middle of a historic run of 9 consecutive 40+ point games that saw him average over 40 points per game for the entire month of February.

You can’t. This is the brilliance of Kobe Bryant to me. In an era where defense reigned supreme, nobody scored better or more spectacularly than he did. The box scores and the highlights went hand-in-hand. Seeing how many points he scored was only part of the fun. You had to see how he scored them too. If you didn’t live through it, I don’t know how to explain it but do yourself a favor and go watch the highlights.

  • Men’s College Basketball: Vanderbilt Commodores @ #15 Kentucky Wildcats at 7:00 pm (ET) on SEC Network

Vandy head coach Mark Byington is a former assistant coach at the College of Charleston. I had several interactions with him during that period and he was always incredibly helpful.

Alright, that will do it for this week! As always, I appreciate you checking out what I have to say. Be sure to share it as well and I’ll catch you later!
