Screen Shots: August 28th-September 3rd 2025

College football is finally here, the US Open, and more WNBA playoff battles!

Welcome to Screen Shots! This is where I tell you what sporting events you should watch on TV every week! Make sure you subscribe so it comes straight to your inbox! Have your own suggestions? Shoot me an email at [email protected]!

If you enjoyed the Gamecock Football Captain’s Log, then you will love The Nameless College Football Show! Picture this: me, my dear friend P.D., all of the most interesting college football stories of the week, PLUS a Gamecock Football Captain’s Log segment! What more could you want? And you don’t even have to do anything different to enjoy it if you’re already subscribed to my YouTube channel! I’m also previewing it on Apple Podcasts and Spotify to see how the audio-only folks like it.

This week, we covered Farmageddon, Arch Manning’s recruiting saga, and broke down P.D.’s games of the week! The goal is for this to drop every Wednesday for your pleasure. As far as the OG Beyond The Arc with Brandon Silvers, we are getting dangerously close to episodes being released more regularly. Prepare accordingly!

Now, to the sports!

  • US Open Tennis: Second Round Coverage begins at 11:30 am (ET) on ESPN/ESPN2

Shout out to KP for keeping me updated on this one while I navigate diaper duty! This has already been a wild one with a Daniil Medvedev tantrum and upset loss, a Madison Keys upset loss, and my introduction to 6’8” Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and his rocket launcher of a serve. Be sure to switch over to ESPN2 at 5:00 pm so you don’t miss a second of the action!

  • College Football: #25 Boise State Broncos @ USF Bulls at 5:30 PM (ET) on ESPN

Or stay on ESPN for some Thursday afternoon college football action! I very badly wish that my Gamecocks would go back to opening the season on Thursdays of week 1. It’s the proper way to kick off Labor Day Weekend. Tune in to see how last year’s Mountain West champions navigate life post-Ashton Jeanty.

  • US Open Tennis: Third Round Coverage begins at 11:30 am (ET) on ESPN/ESPN2

Switch over to ESPN2 at 6:00 pm!

  • WNBA: Indiana Fever @ Los Angeles Sparks at 10:00 pm (ET) on ION

Last week’s theme was the Battle for the 2 Seed. A quick peek at the standings shows the battle for seeds 6-8 is just as competitive. 4 teams fighting for 3 playoff spots, separated by just 2 games. The Sparks are right on the outside of the playoff picture as they try to overcome an injury-plagued, slow start and sneak into the postseason. Meanwhile, Indiana is doing the opposite, as their injury issues have led to them desperately trying to hold onto their playoff berth. There have been rumblings that Caitlin Clark could make her return in this one. If so, can she get up to speed fast enough to make a positive impact?

  • English Premier League: Chelsea @ Fulham at 7:30 am (ET) on USA Network

The perfect background noise as you make your preparations for the first full Saturday of the college football season.

  • US Open Tennis: Third Round Coverage begins at 11:30 am (ET) on ESPN2

A little something for the commercial breaks.

  • College Football: #1 Texas Longhorns @ #3 Ohio State Buckeyes at 12:00 pm (ET) on Fox

And here we go! Huge matchup as the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes take on Arch Manning in his first start as the guy at Texas. The only things missing from the Manning family trophy case are a national title and a Heisman Trophy. A big showing here would go a long way towards fixing that.

  • College Football: #9 LSU Tigers @ #4 Clemson Tigers at 7:30 pm (ET) on ABC

As mentioned in the episode at the beginning of the newsletter, this is a battle of tigers, Death Valleys, and hateable coaches. This is their first time facing off since LSU (then-coached by the more lovable Ed Orgeron) drilled Dabo’s Tigers in the 2020 national championship game. No matter who loses, we will rejoice.

  • WNBA: New York Liberty @ Phoenix Mercury at 10:00 pm (ET) on NBA TV

What started last week as a four-team Battle for the 2 Seed has turned into a battle for homecourt advantage in a potential first-round matchup between the Mercury and Liberty.

  • US Open Tennis: Round of 16 Coverage begins at 11:00 am (ET) on ESPN/ABC/ESPN2

Switch to ABC at 3:00 pm, then to ESPN2 at 6:00 pm.

  • College Football: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. #13 South Carolina Gamecocks at 3:00 pm (ET) on ESPN

In case you were wondering about the US Open’s channel surfing. This one will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and Lord willing, I’ll be there!

  • College Football: #6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ #10 Miami Hurricanes at 7:30 pm (ET) on ABC

Before it started focusing on subjects like Dude Perfect, shit-ass Texas A&M alums turned trick shot artists, there was nothing better than ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary series. One of the more iconic films was Catholics vs. Convicts, which looked at everything surrounding the 1988 game between the Fighting Irish and the Hurricanes. The biggest change since then is that Notre Dame is no longer coached by a melted wax figure of a bassethound who taught himself how to talk by watching Daffy Duck.

The biggest similarity to that 1988 game is that both programs have national title aspirations. The Fighting Irish, who last won it all during that 1988 season, made a somewhat surprising run to the title game last year. They have a new QB in CJ Carr, who’s the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr.

Miami also has a new QB in very old QB Carson Beck. He won two national championships as a backup to Stetson Bennett at Georgia, but was somewhere between serviceable and underwhelming as a starter himself. It’s hard to imagine he’ll be surrounded by more talent than he had in Athens, but perhaps the lack of fans barking on the street will inspire him to be great.

  • US Open Tennis: Round of 16 Coverage begins at 11:00 am (ET) on ESPN/ESPN2

Head on over to ESPN2 at 7:00 pm!

  • College Volleyball: #2 Penn State Nittany Lions vs. #25 TCU Horned Frogs at 5:00 pm (ET) on Fox

Penn State started off its title defense strong with wins against #12 Creighton and #14 Kansas. Volleyball is stacked with daughters of former athletes you’ve heard of, and the Nittany Lions are no exception. They have added a second daughter of former NFL WR Joe Jurevicius, plus Alexis Ewing, daughter of Space Jam star/Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. I will not hold Patrick’s crime of rejecting my childhood autograph request against her!

  • College Football: TCU Horned Frogs @ North Carolina Tar Heels at 8:00 pm (ET) on ESPN

Will Bill Belichick’s relationship be too much of a distraction for his football team? Can you believe that you just read that sentence and that this is real life? Well, here we are. I have no clue what to expect, and, honestly, this is the kind of chaos that I’ve come to love and expect from college football.

  • US Open Tennis: Quarterfinals Coverage begins at 11:30 am (ET) on ESPN/ESPN2

Head on over to ESPN2 at 7:00 pm! Also, catch your breath from all of the major sports action we’ve been watching.

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025

  • MLB: New York Yankees @ Houston Astros at 8:10 pm (ET) on Prime Video

I can’t stand complimenting the Astros, but P Hunter Brown has had one hell of a season. His 2.37 ERA ranks him 3rd in the majors among starters. The AL Cy Young has Tarik Skubal’s name on it already, but this has been an impressive campaign for the 26-year-old Brown. Yankees SS Anthony Volpe will try to help him lower his ERA even more!

As always, thank you for reading! Be sure to subscribe so you get this in your inbox first thing Thursday mornings! And be sure to share with your friends! See you next week!
